In honor of National Geographic’s All Roads Film Festival, going on now through October 3rd, I decided to feature some of my favorite movies about the environment. If you’re in the Washington, D.C. area this weekend, check out the All Roads Film Festival. The website has a listing of all the movies playing this weekend. If you aren’t in the area, rent one of these movies, pop some popcorn, and learn a little bit about the environment from the comfort of your own home.

1. Fern Gully
    The magical inhabitants of a rainforest called FernGully fight to save their home that is threatened by logging and a polluting force of destruction called Hexxus.
    Why you should see it: Robin Williams does an excellent “Batty Rap.”

2. Wall-E
    In the distant future, a small waste collecting robot inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will ultimately decide the fate of mankind.
    Why you should see it: It will not only make you laugh, but it will also inspire you to reevaluate how you treat our planet.

3. Food, Inc
    An unflattering look inside America’s corporate controlled food industry.
    Why you should see it: It gives you a crucial insight into the production of one of life’s most vital resources: food.

4. Avatar
    A paraplegic marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.
    Why you should see it: The artistic and imaginative world that is Pandora illuminates the beauty of our own, real world.

5. The Cove
    Using state-of-the-art equipment, a group of activists, led by renowned dolphin trainer Ric O’Barry, infiltrate a cove near Taijii, Japan to expose both a shocking instance of animal abuse and a serious threat to human health.
    Why you should see it: O’Barry makes a compelling argument against keeping Dolphins captive and exposes an ugly operation that is harmful to dolphin populations of the Pacific.
