Mapping Monday: MapMaker Interactive Tutorials

This Mapping Monday, we’re sharing some user-generated tutorials for our MapMaker Interactive. The MapMaker Interactive is a online mapping tool that allows students (or for that matter, anyone!) to explore the world using map themes, data and tools. Our online map makes it easy for students to visually explore and interact with our interconnected social and physical Earth systems.

The MapMaker Interactive is an online mapping tool available at NatGeoEd.org. Map features include thematic layers that can be turned off and on, with adjustable transparency. The adjustable transparency is a useful feature because it allows the user to see how two thematic layers (such as earthquakes and plate tectonics) are related spatially.

Using this powerful mapping tool for the first time might seem daunting even though it’s very user friendly. These tutorials, created by online users of the map, help shed some light on its best and most accessible features.

User Elicia Selvaggio gives a fabulous start-to-finish tutorial on how to use the MapMaker Interactive from the perspective of how she uses the map in class with her students.

User Christian Rogers gives a short and sweet overview of some of the MapMaker Interactive’s more advanced (but still easy to use!) features, like the polygon tool (which allows you to measure area on the map), line tool (which allows you to draw on the map), and how to save your map and come back to it later.

User kbencar25 shares an example of a project she created with a group of fellow teachers. Her map focuses on National Parks in the United States, as well as how it links to content standards.

Have you created an online tutorial for one of our mapping tools? Share it below! We would love to hear from you.
