Be a GeoWeek Campus Representative!

We’re looking for college and university students who are passionate about geography and want to share the message of its importance with others.

Campus Challenge

JOIN US IN THIS CAMPAIGN!!!

WHAT:  Highlight geography on your campus during Geography Awareness Week (Nov. 17-23).

WHY: To earn your National Geographic GeoWeek Campus Representative Certificate and become more involved in your Geography Department (i.e. give your faculty something awesome to write about in all their letters of recommendation).

HOW: Earn 500 points by doing any combination of activities from the two lists below, and telling us about it. Then we’ll email you a formal letter of thanks and your certificate.  Really creative activities may be selected to appear on the NatGeo Education Facebook page and blog!

The ideas on this list are meant as suggestions and are open to interpretation and enhancement.  Guides, How-Tos, ideas and a ton of helpful resources are here.

Promotional Activities:

  • 100 Points:
    • Download a GeoWeek poster and plaster it all over campus
    • Write a blog post about the coolness of geography for a local blog
    • Submit a geography blog post to the GeoWeek Blog-A-Thon by emailing GeographyAwarenessWeek.org (Subject line: Blog-A-Thon)
  • 200 Points:
    •  Chalk GeoWeek and geography messages all over campus
    • Put GeoWeek promotional materials or event announcements on community bulletin boards, and in local businesses
    • Create a list of Facebook posts and tweets to put on your Geography Department or college’s page or web site during GeoWeek and give them to the person in charge, or offer to help them out
  • 300 Points:
    •  Place a story promoting or about Geography in your Campus paper
    • Place a story promoting or about Geography in your local paper
  • 400 Points:
    • Create a 5 minute video about why Geography is important
    • Create your own GeoWeek poster, Facebook icon, geography meme

???:  CREATE YOUR OWN (and tell us why you think it deserves points)

Event Activities:

  • 200 Points:
    • Organize an online TwitterChat or Google+ Hangout about geography
    • Organize a letter writing campaign with at least 25 people for SUFG
  • 300 Points:
    • Host a “Get to Know Geography” event with your Gamma Theta Upslion Geography Honors Society or other Geography Club
    • Ask to plug GeoWeek at any existing Geography or Education department events
    • Have a Geography Department open house during GeoWeek
  • 400 Points:
    • Organize a service project related to geography
    • Organize a classroom visit to a local school
    • Hold a campus-wide competition to create a GeoWeek poster, a Facebook icon, geography meme
    • Host a geography quiz night using these resources
  • 500 Points:
    •  Host a speaker series related to Geography
  • ???: CREATE YOUR OWN (and tell us why you think it deserves points)

*REMEMBER: Before you do any or all of these activities please make sure you check that your proposed actions are consistent with all of your institution’s rules and regulations.  Make sure you get all necessary permissions and authorizations before posting materials or hosting an event.
