Discussion Ideas

  • What are refugees?

  • What are host countries?
    • Host countries are nations or regions to which refugees flee.

The Syrian Civil War has forced more than 4 million Syrians to flee their countries. Most have fled to the nearby hosts countries of Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq. Remember, this is not a National Geographic map. This is an amateur map using the National Geographic MapMaker Interactive tool. These numbers are estimates, as many Syrian refugees are undocumented or unregistered as they search for a better life in the more politically and economically stable countries of the West. Please use MapMaker to update and modify this map as information changes or becomes available. The European Union and United Nations are great sources of more information on Syrian refugees.

  • Why are Syrian families fleeing their country?
    • Syria is engaged in an horrific civil war. The authoritarian government of President Bashar al-Assad is being opposed by rebel groups with different agendas, from greater freedom to the establishment of an Islamist state. A Kurdish-dominated region in Syria has also declared independence. And then there’s ISIS, an international terrorist organization seeking to establish a new caliphate with a Syrian capital.
